Healthy Environment, Healthy Kidneys: NPA Promotes LPG as Safer Alternative to Firewood and Charcoal

The Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, Esq., has underscored the strong link between environmental protection and kidney health, urging Ghanaians to adopt cleaner fuel alternatives such as Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) instead of firewood and charcoal.

Speaking at the launch of the 2026 activities marking World Kidney Day at Burma Camp on Tuesday, 10th March 2026, the NPA Chief Executive noted that reducing exposure to smoke from traditional cooking fuels is vital for protecting public health and preventing diseases that place strain on vital organs, including the kidneys.

The speech was delivered on his behalf by the Director of Consumer Services, Mrs. Eunice Budu-Nyarko.

According to him, promoting kidney health through environmental protection and cleaner energy aligns with the NPA’s mandate to regulate the downstream petroleum sector and ensure the availability of high-quality fuels that minimize harmful emissions and environmental pollution.

“The NPA is proud to support the World Kidney Day activities through the sponsorship of public education programmes, medical screening initiatives and outreach efforts targeted at vulnerable communities. This forms part of the Authority’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives in healthcare promotion and social development,” he stated.

The event, hosted by the Ghana Armed Forces Critical and Emergency Hospital, brought together health professionals, policymakers and members of the public to raise awareness on kidney disease prevention and early detection. The 2026 celebration is on the theme: “Kidney Health for All: Caring for People, Protecting the Planet.”

In his keynote address, the Minister for Health and Member of Parliament for Juaboso, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening the country’s healthcare system through preventive care and improved access to treatment, including initiatives such as the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as “Mahama Care.”

Deputy Minister for Defence, Hon. Ernest Brogya Genfi, also emphasized that national security extends beyond protecting borders to safeguarding the environment, preserving water bodies and ensuring the wellbeing of citizens.

The event was attended by senior officials of the Ghana Armed Forces including the Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Naval Staff and other Service Chiefs as well health practitioners, students and members of the public.

On the sidelines of the event, staff of the Authority took the opportunity to conduct gas safety sensitization, including education on the proper use of LPG cylinders. The exercise was led by Ing. Johnson Gbagbo Jnr, Head of Consumer Data Analytics and Market Intelligence.
